Pharmacology of Plan B

Mode of action – contraceptive, gestagenic.

The drug causes ovulation inhibition and changes in the endometrium, prevents implantation of a fertilized egg. It increases the viscosity of the cervical mucus, which hinders the promotion of sperm.

Application of the substance

Inside. Emergency postcoital contraception in women (including unprotected sexual intercourse and if the applied method of contraception can not be considered reliable).

For therapeutic intrauterine system. Contraception (long-term), idiopathic menorrhagia, prevention of endometrial hyperplasia during estrogen replacement therapy.

Contraindications of Plan B

Hypersensitivity, pregnancy (or suspicion of it); oral (optional) – severe liver or biliary tract disease, jaundice (including history), puberty, breast-feeding; Navy (optional) – existing or recurrent inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs, infections of the lower genital tract, postpartum endometritis, septic abortion in the past 3 months, cervicitis, diseases accompanied by increased susceptibility to infections; cervical dysplasia, cancer of the uterus or cervix, including mammary cancer; abnormal uterine bleeding of unknown etiology, congenital or acquired uterine anomaly including fibroids, leading to deformation of the uterus; acute liver disease or tumor.

Restrictions apply of Plan B

For the Navy. After consultation with a specialist: migraine, focal migraine with asymmetrical visual loss or other symptoms indicating transient cerebral ischemia; unusually severe headache; jaundice, severe hypertension; severe circulatory disorders, including stroke and myocardial infarction.

Side effects of Plan B

In clinical trials, the most common in women taking levonorgestrel orally (0.75 mg) were observed nausea (23.1%), abdominal pain (17.6%), fatigue (16.9%), headache (16, 8%), menstrual disorders, including excessive menstrual bleeding (13.8%), poor menstrual bleeding (12.5%), dizziness (11.2%), tension of the mammary glands (10.7%), vomiting (5.6%), diarrhea (5, 0%).

When using the IUD

From the nervous system and sensory organs: ≥1%, <10% – low mood, nervousness, headache; ≥ 0.1%, <1% – mood lability, migraine.

From the digestive tract: ≥1%, <10% – abdominal pain, nausea; ≥0,1%, <1% – bloating.

With the genitourinary system: ≥1% – uterine / vaginal bleeding, spotting, and oligo-amenorrhea, benign ovarian cysts; ≥1%, <10% – pain in the pelvic organs, dysmenorrhea, vaginal discharge, vulvovaginal, tension of the mammary glands, breast tenderness, decreased libido; ≥ 0.1%, <1% – inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs, endometritis, cervicitis; ≥0,01%, <0,1% – uterine perforation.

For the skin: ≥1%, <10% – acne; ≥ 0.1%, <1% – alopecia, rash, hirsutism, pruritus, eczema; ≥0,01%, <0,1% – rash, hives.

Other: ≥1%, <10% – back pain, weight gain; ≥0,1%, <1% – swelling.
