Indications for use

Zyvox is an antibiotic administrated to treat pneumonia, severe and mild skin infections, and diabetic food. It might be directed in other situations, not listed in the article.

Zyvox is not prescribed to the patients with hypersensitivity and known allergic reactions to the antibiotics of oxazalidonon group.

Myelotoxicity was found in patients who used linezolid. Myelotoxicity is a severe side effect which usually occurs during certain medications which have effects on the immune system. It is about decreasing level of leucocytes, erythrocytes and thrombocytes. Such condition may lead to the worsening of infection, since the immune system loses the ability to resist due to deficiency of immune and other cells. After discontinuing taking Zyvox, the blood cells rose to the initial level. Certain lab tests, especially for those patients, who take Zyvox during 28 days, are the way of controlling the myelotoxicity.

Among those, who used Zyvox for longer than 28 days, it was reported about peripheral and optic neuropathy. Eye tests and supervision of the ophthalmologist are necessary during the long-term treatment.

Serotonin syndrome was reported spontaneously and even led to fatalities. This syndrome usually appears as a combination of symptoms which are connected with the negative drug interactions. Serotonin syndrome, also known as serotonin toxicity, is sometimes called a form of drug intoxication, as it can occur as a sign of the overdose. Zyvox must not be taken in combination with medicines which cause serious interactions. In case the patient is already taking the medicine which should not be combined with linezolid, this medication must be stopped.

Hypoglycemia is an effect which is likely to occur in diabetic patients using insulin. It is also known as low blood sugar o glucose level. If hypoglycemia occurs, the insulin dosage must be decreased.

Make sure you have warned the specialist about the allergic reactions and deceases you have. In addition to the listed cases, Zyvox must be cautiously prescribed to people with liver and kidney failure, pregnant women.

There were no experiments to know how linezolid affects the fetus that is why Zyvox must be administrated to pregnant women only if there are no other options. The antibiotic also passes into the breast milk, so the breastfeeding should be discontinued during the therapy.
