Pharmacology of Meclizine

Mode of action — antiemetic, antihistamine, anti-allergic.

Blocks of H1-histamine receptors and reduces the vasodilator effect of histamine spasmogenic. It has weak activity.

Application of Meclizine

Nausea, vomiting and dizziness (including when kinetoses, Meniere’s syndrome, labyrinth and vestibular disorders, vertigo); immediate type allergic reactions (including skin diseases accompanied by itching).

Contraindications of Meclizine

Hypersensitivity, children under 12 years of age (safety and efficacy of the children are not identified).

Restrictions apply to:

Bronchial asthma, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, pregnancy.

Side effects of Meclizine

From the nervous system: fatigue, drowsiness, children — sometimes irritability, rarely — blurred vision.

From the digestive tract: dry mouth, vomiting.

Overdose of Meclizine

Symptoms in adults — CNS depression, drowsiness, coma, convulsions; in elderly patients — hypotension; children — CNS stimulation (hallucinations, sleep disorders, convulsions).

Treatment: induction vomiting (if from the moment of the reception was not more than 1 hour), gastric lavage, the appointment of activated carbon; symptomatic and supportive therapy; with hypotension — introduction of vasopressor agents (other than epinephrine); to mitigate the effects of anticholinergic — physostigmine; with a view to treat seizures Diazepam (w / w).

Dosage of Meclizine

Inside; adults and children over 12 years:

for the prophylaxis and symptomatic treatment of nausea, vomiting and dizziness:

25-100 mg / day in divided doses. If motion sickness — once 25-50 mg 1 hour before traveling; if necessary — again every 24 hours;

nausea and vomiting during pregnancy — 25-50 mg / day;

and labyrinth disorders vestibular disorders — 25-100 mg / day;

nausea and vomiting with radiation therapy — 50 mg for 2-12 hours prior to irradiation.
